15th-16th September 2023 – COMBAR 5th India Round Table 2023 – Mumbai

Registration is now open for the 5th COMBAR India Round Table which will take place in Mumbai, starting with a reception on the evening of Friday 15th September 2023 and finishing with a dinner on Saturday 16th September 2023.

The conference and events will be held at The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, an iconic venue located in the heart of Mumbai.

We are honoured and delighted that our Judicial Guests will include The Right Hon Lord Leggatt, Justice of the UK Supreme Court.

Monday 19th June – “The Art of Persuasion” by Jack Baughman JFB Legal

In a change to our published schedule we are pleased to welcome COMBAR Honorary Overseas Member, Jack Baughman of JFB Legal who will conduct a talk on

The Art of Persuasion

Jack was a key panellist at the recent COMBAR North American and Offshore meeting in Boston.  He will be reviving his presentation on “The Art of Persuasion”  (with a few bonus topics) calling on his experience as a trial lawyer in the USA.

The talk will take place in rooms at the Ashworth Centre, Lincoln’s Inn from 5.45pm to 6.45pm.  It is open to Combar Members only. Pupils are welcome.

27th June – Online Panel Discussion with The Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners at 5pm

 

Following on from the recommendation contained in the Black Inclusion Group’s report “The Specialist Commercial Bar & Black Inclusion – First Steps”, a Zoom-only workshop has been arranged by COMBAR, ChBA and TecBar with the editors of The Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners to consider issues of representation and inclusion and to encourage directory submissions from the most diverse pool of applicants.

The panellists will discuss applications to the directories and answer questions on the submission process.

Whilst questions can of course be asked on the night, we would also encourage members to submit any questions they may have in advance, as part of the registration form, and which will then be asked anonymously.

Postponed – “Crypto-currency fraud: legal remedies in a digital age”. By Mr Justice Calver.

15th March – Junior COMBAR Celebrates International Woman’s Day

Junior COMBAR invites you to a hybrid panel discussion, hosted at Gatehouse Chambers.  It will be followed by drinks and networking to mark International Women’s Day.  Our speakers will cover career development, caring responsibilities and career breaks, health and wellbeing. Places are strictly limited so please register at the link to guarantee your attendance in person. There is no need to register to attend online.

16th January – “Wellbeing at the Commercial Bar”

An open discussion involving the judiciary, the bar and clerks on the range of wellbeing issues affecting the modern commercial bar and possible responses. The panel will consist of:

David Joseph KC (Chair of COMBAR, Essex Court Chambers)

Oliver Caplin (barrister, Twenty Essex; advisory board member, Wellness for Law)

Lucy Burrows (Deputy Senior practice manager, 3VB; committee member, Wellbeing at the Bar)

The event is intended to be the beginning of a conversation about wellbeing over a number of COMBAR events. Discussion with the audience will be welcomed by the panel.

The seminar will take place in rooms 6-8 at the Ashworth Centre at Lincoln’s Inn at 5:45pm and will be hybrid, but not recorded. Pupils welcome.
